Soft tissue manipulation, also known as soft tissue osteopathy, is a gentle, hands-on therapy that focuses on the body’s soft tissues, such as muscles, fascia, nerves, blood vessels, lymphatic structures, and internal organs. These tissues support how the body moves, communicates, and functions as a whole as they influence how the body self-regulates and maintains internal harmony. Soft tissue manipulation works to support the health of these tissues so they can function optimally and encourage the body’s natural ability to heal.
Soft tissue manipulation is similar to chiropractic care in that both address mobility. However, in soft tissue manipulation, attention is intentionally directed toward the internal structures that influence how the body functions as a whole. Chiropractic care is a branch of osteopathy that emphasizes the alignment and movement of skeletal structures, particularly the spine, with the goal of improving joint mobility and supporting nervous system function. Unlike chiropractic care, soft tissue manipulation focuses on the health and mobility of the body’s soft tissues rather than on bones and joints. Restrictions within these tissues can affect posture, movement, circulation, and comfort, even when joints appear structurally sound. As tissues become more responsive with treatment, many pets experience improved comfort, ease of movement, and overall well-being.
An integrative application of soft tissue manipulation allows it to be used alongside other therapies such as acupuncture, laser therapy, and rehabilitation exercises. When combined, these modalities support one another and help the body respond more effectively to care. Soft tissue manipulation is noninvasive and thoughtfully adapted to each patient, hence supporting the body’s ability to self-regulate. This therapy can be beneficial for patients across all life stages, from young, active animals to seniors living with chronic conditions.
Soft tissue manipulation may offer a wide range of benefits for pets, including:
• Reduction of pain and muscular tension
• Improved flexibility and range of motion
• Improved circulation to vital organs
• Support for healthy lymphatic and organ function
• Assistance with hormone regulation and maintaining balance between organ systems
• Correction of postural imbalances
• Enhanced relaxation and overall well-being
Balanced Pet NW is pleased to now offer massage therapy in addition to osteopathic soft tissue techniques. Lynnette, veterinary assistant, has completed her Small Animal Massage Certification, expanding the care options available to our patients. Massage therapy can be a valuable addition to a pet’s care plan, providing comfort, relaxation, and support for both physical and emotional well-being.
Careful assessment guides our treatment plan, with comfort and safety remaining top priorities. Our goal is to relieve symptoms while supporting long-term healing of the whole patient. We honor each animal’s autonomy and unique needs, as well as their natural capacity for self-healing, while promoting healthy function and quality of life.
If you feel your pet may benefit from soft tissue manipulation or massage therapy, we invite you to reach out to schedule a consultation. Dedicated, individualized care remains at the heart of everything we do.
